Summer 2008 Counselor Positions For
EOF, Governor's School, TARGET, and Young Scholars

The Engineers of the Future Summer Institute (EOFSI) is comprised of various programs at Rutgers University all dedicated to increasing the awareness and appreciation of engineering, science, and mathematics across various developmental levels.  This summer, the following programs will take place:

    • EOF - The Engineers of the Future  6/29/08 - 8/1/08
    A residential program for approximately 60 incoming first year engineering students at Rutgers.

    • The NJ Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology  6/29/08– 7/19/08
    90 high school students who have just completed 11th grade

    • TARGET- The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology  6/30/08-8/1/08
    5 separate week long commuter programs for 25 girls each. The 5 programs are for students who have completed 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade, respectively.

    • The Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics  7/7/08 - 8/1/08
    Approximately 40 high school students

 Description of Positions

COUNSELOR, Engineers of the Future (EOF)- EOF is a program for incoming Rutgers Engineering freshmen who come from economically or educationally disadvantaged families or communities. Students take a full complement of academic courses that mirror the classes they will see in the fall. Students also participate in nightly tutoring sessions as well as academic enrichment activities. Counselors live in the residence hall with the students for the duration of the program. Counselors are expected to ensure the safety and well-being of the institute participants as well as to develop a sense of community, promote academic endeavors, support the Office of Student Development and design programs of social and academic/professional nature.  All counselors are required to attend a one day training in June, and will be in residence full-time from 6/22/08 - 08/02/08.  All counselors will be required to take a defensive driving course.
Compensation: Room and board for the duration of the position, as well as a competitive salary. Salary is based upon final budget analysis, to be determined.
 

COUNSELOR/RESIDENTIAL TEACHING ASSOCIATE, Governor's School of Engineering and Technology (click for program website)- The Governor's School brings approximately 90 rising high school seniors to Rutgers for 3 weeks to study engineering and technology. Students selected for Governor's School are among the most academically talented and most motivated in the state of New Jersey, and engage in both classes and a small group research project while they are here. Counselors live in the dormitory with the Governor's School students for the duration of the program. Counselors are expected to ensure the safety and well-being of the scholars as well as to develop a sense of community, promote academic endeavors, support the Office of Student Development, and design social programs. Governor's School counselors are known as Residential Teaching Associates since they are expected to take a very active role in the educational experience of the students. Counselors/RTAs serve as a co-advisor for students' research, help to plan supplementary learning experiences, and guide the students in activities that demonstrate engineers' contributions to society. There are also (optional) opportunities for counselors to gain classroom teaching experience if they desire. Because of the intensive combination of social and academic responsibilities, Governor's School counselors are not permitted to take any classes during the program. All counselors are required to attend a one day training in June, complete a defensive driving course, and be in residence full-time from 6/22/08 - 07/22/08.

TEAM LEADER, TARGET- The Academy At Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology (click for program website) -TARGET is a commuter program for girls in the 6th through 10th grades who are interested in engineering and technology.  A team leader will be assigned to a group of four or five of the participants.  The team leader will be responsible for those girls throughout the program, ensuring their well-being and safety, accompanying them to all program activities, and facilitating lab and engineering projects and activities.  The team leaders will also work closely with the other team leaders in implementing recreational activities and assisting in the operation of the program. Although the participants commute each day, team leaders will live together on campus.  Applicants must be female math, science or engineering majors. All team leaders are required to attend a one day training in June as well as a one week training prior to the start of the program. TARGET Team Leaders will be in residence from 6/22/08 - 8/1/08.
Compensation: Housing, weekday lunches and salary.  Salary is based upon final budget analysis, to be determined.
 

COUNSELOR, The Rutgers Young Scholars Program in Discrete Mathematics (click for program website)- Young Scholars is a summer residential academic program for 40 mathematically gifted high school students.  The students spend each day in both morning and afternoon classes, homework sessions, variety sessions, and recreational activities.  Students are housed Monday through Friday on the Busch Campus and students will return home on the weekends. The duties of the Residence Life Staff are similar to those of a residence hall staff during the academic year, including programming responsibilities.  The Residence Life Staff specific responsibilities will include monitoring of participants, planning and implementation of residential programs, facilitation of safety and security of participants.  Compensation for the residence life staff includes room, board and a stipend.  The residence life staff is required to reside in McCormick Hall, Busch Campus with the students, from July 7th - August 1st, 2008 (excluding weekends).  Applicants may be undergraduate or graduate students.  Prior residence life experience or former participation in the program is preferred but not required.  Attendance at a Residence Life day long training session in June is mandatory.
